03 - Teams and their functions in a red team engagement

There are different groups of peole/teams that will be involved in a red team engagement

  • Blue Cell - consists of blue team members, defenders, internal staff, and an organisation’s management in general all the people responsible for defending a target network.
  • Red Cell - offensive portion of a red team engagement
  • White Cell - Serves as referee between red cell activities and blue cell responses during an engagement. Controls the engagement environment/network. Monitors adherence to the ROE. Coordinates activities required to achieve engagement goals. Correlates red cell activities with defensive actions. Ensures the engagement is conducted without bias to either side.

Everyone/Every team will have their mindset and methodology and personnel to approach the engagement

The red cell has members who have different roles

  • Red Team Lead Plans and organises engagements at a high leel as well as delegate engagement assignments.
  • Red Team Assistant Lead Assists the team lead in overseeing engagement operations and operators. Can also assist in writing engagement plans and documentation if required.
  • Red Team Operator Interpret and engagement plans from team leads then Executes the assignments
